Precious drops of water

We all know that there would be no life on earth without water, however managing and protecting our precious water resources is one of the greatest challenges that we face in Western Australia.

Perth is the one of the driest capital cities in the world, and having lived in Perth for more than 20 years we remain very aware of the issue. Yet despite this awareness, we took for granted the water that continued to flow freely from our taps!!

In Balingup the reality is very different! We rely on a spring fed water resource. Beautiful, clean water . . . . which flows underground and surfaces at a small site on the side of our hill. We pump from there up the hill into holding tanks, and our precious water gravity feeds back down to the Cottages and our stone farmhouse.

With significantly reduced rainfall, the volume of water flowing in to our spring has reduced significantly. And during several dry periods in recent years, the spring has slowed to a standstill! This is when we really appreciate our water precious.

In response to this reality, we installed a 110,000lt storage tank in 2011 (not nearly large enough in hind site) . . . it sits beside the original the 20,000lt storage tank which had served the property for some 20 years prior. We have also tapped into another small dam on the property, installed a rain water tank on the farmhouse and a grey water recycling unit. All of the water which feeds to the Cottages and to the farmhouse now also passes through a UV filtration unit . . …. and we recycle the filtration system backwash water.

After a month of good rains we have filled all of our tanks for the first time in two years. . . a source for celebration!
